About Dirk, His Injuries, and the Homeiers

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” Acts 20:24

Dirk Homeier, age 41, from Chatham, Illinois was in a serious bicycle accident while riding with friends on February 2, 2012 in Springfield, IL.  His injuries included:  multiple facial lacerations and fractures, a Grade 3 liver laceration, cervical artery dissection, brain swelling and injury. He was in the ICU and acute rehab at Memorial Medical center, but has recently been released to continue his long road to recovery at home, surrounded by his family.

Dirk is the husband to Sarah, and father of 6 beautiful children. Dirk and Sarah are very active in the fostering community, and 3 of their children are adopted, 1 is a foster child and they also have 2 biological children.  They are former members of West Side Christian Church and current members of Cherry Hills Baptist Church.  They are very active in several ministry projects and are founders of the newly established ‘James Project’, a non-for-profit agency helping provide for foster families’ needs.

Dirk has been an AVID cyclist for many years.  He has participated in several cross-country rides with his father, Chris, and even holds the record for Longest Continuous Bicycle Ride in the Guinness Book of World Records.  He rode 442 consecutive miles in just over 31 hours in 2000.
